If you already have a Windows computer, you will have seen the warning from Microsoft. In October 2025, support and monthly security updates will stop from Microsoft. There will be an option to get updates for your Windows 10 24H2 system for at least a year, but then you will have to pay for them separately. How much that will be exactly is not yet known. Mainly because of better security, Microsoft is going to impose all kinds of additional requirements on what your computer must meet. A TPM 2.0 chip or higher, screen resolution, and a minimum amount of memory. Many computers that private individuals use do not meet these requirements. Do you already know whether your computer can still be upgraded to Windows 11 for free? No? Unfortunately, this makes you as a consumer immediately vulnerable if you use the internet with such an outdated computer after October 14, 2025. Do you really want to take that risk?
What should you do now? No situation is the same, but eventually you will have to do something about it. Apart from the fact that you do not want to get a virus on your computer, or worse, for example, have your online data stolen, there will come a time when you still want to look up things online, arrange your banking, book a trip, or make an appointment with the doctor/hospital online. This will not change immediately in 2025, but in 2026 you can really expect that banks, health insurers, DigiD and web shops will expect you to no longer handle your online things via old computers. They will simply no longer allow it.
